Join us for an 'Aerospace Elevator' Lunchtime webinar session, hosted in collaboration with Dentons.
Join Gerard Dale, Michael Zolandz and Güneş Haksever on Wednesday 30 July as they introduce the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and explore how they may apply to New Zealand businesses engaged in defence-related trade or collaboration with U.S. entities.
Gerard, Michael and Güneş will outline the nature and scope of ITAR, highlight the importance of understanding multi-jurisdictional export control risks, and explain how ITAR obligations intersect with New Zealand’s own export control regime.
Given the complexity of these frameworks, they will also emphasise the importance of due diligence and specialist legal advice before handling controlled items, technical data, or services that may be subject to ITAR.
Gerard is a Corporate and Commercial Partner at Dentons in New Zealand. He is a seasoned corporate and commercial lawyer with over 25 years’ direct, extensive experience in all aspects of corporate and commercial law, which includes aerospace, defense, technology transfer, international manufacturing and production and delivery contracts and public and private equity investment.

Mike Zolandz is the chair of Dentons' Federal Regulatory and Compliance practice, and serves as the Managing Partner for Dentons’ Washington, DC office. Mike focuses his practice on advising clients on their most critical and complex trade compliance and foreign investment projects, specializing in cross-border transactions and regulations related to international commerce.

Mike also brings decades of policy experience in Washington to offer clients insight into the legislative and regulatory process beyond purely technical expertise.
Mike has led internal investigations and regulatory disclosures under US export control and sanctions programs, and managed complex compliance enhancements and program development for US and multinational companies across industry sectors. Mike’s compliance expertise also extends to experience with federal and state campaign finance and ethics law, lobbying disclosure requirements and pay-to-play restrictions, as well as registration requirements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).
Güneş Haksever is a Senior Associate at Dentons in New Zealand Innovation and Technology practice with over 12 years of experience, with focus on defence and export control matters.
He advises on New Zealand export control, U.S. ITAR, and dual-use goods, supporting aerospace and advanced manufacturing clients on cross-border compliance and regulatory strategy. Güneş also contributes to Dentons' internal defence resorces, including ITAR guidance and commentary on New Zealand's defence capability strategy.

Associate Exclusive - NASA PREFIRE Launch Event
It is our absolute pleasure to invite Aerospace New Zealand Associates to join us at the Christchurch event for the NASA PREFIRE Launch.
Launching from New Zealand, NASA’s PREFIRE mission aims to measure Earth’s spectrally- resolved thermal emission, capturing Earth’s Planck function for the first time globally. PREFIRE uses a novel instrument that combines simple, miniaturized, passively cooled heat sensors with specially shaped optics and microelectronics to provide these measurements. Data from this mission aims to increase confidence in future projections of various climate change impacts, such as ongoing ice sheet melt, sea level rise, and changing cloud types. The CubeSats being launched for this mission represent the frontier of low-cost Earth observation for robust climate science. This seminar introduces the mission design and the scientific background along with a discussion about future-proofing Earth observation and the complexities of doing science with CubeSats.
Key speakers include:
Tristan L’Ecuyer is a professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (AOS) and director of the
Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) at the University of Wisconsin-
